This is by no means a comprehensive list of starship science labs. It is, however, a list of example labs with descriptions of the types of work that might be performed here. Also included are a few select images.
These labs assist in the study and research of aquatic life-forms. Cetacean operations is usually integrated within the aquatic lab. Whereas aquatics studies all forms of aquatic life, Cetacean ops focuses on mammals. Biologists, and especially marine biologists, work here. Work in these labs can yield new discoveries about various aquatic life throughout the galaxy.
This isn't a lab, per se, however botanists often engage in research projects here. The arboretum is most often utilized as a recreation area, a place where crew can relax and enjoy the garden. Scientific work here studies the properties of various plant life from across the galaxy, and can yield useful compounds for medicinal or sutainment purposes.
REGULA 1 LAB
These labs assist in the study of all interstellar physics. All forces and energies exerted by or to various objects are studied here. Work in these labs studies and predicts the behaviour of interstellar objects, forces and energies including large-scale gravitatinal forces and cosmic background radiation. Due to the nature of starship missions, most physicists will work primarially within astrophysics.
These labs are primarially under the purview of the Chief Medical Officer, though a Science Officer may utilize them from time to time. Work in these labs focuses on biological and medical subject matter including toxins, pathogens, xenoanatomy and other studies.
These labs are shared between Medical and Science. Medcial utilizes them for study of medicines and biological samples, and Science utilizes them for study of inatimate materials. Work in these labs studies and predicts the behaviours of various chemical reactions and what may happen when Material X comes in contact with Material Y.
CONSTITUTION CLASS LAB
These labs assist in the study of artificial intelligence on all levels from nanites to androids. Although the most famous work in these labs has yielded sentient life forms such as androids and exocomps, other work is done here as well. Usually a cyberneticist will work hand-in-hand with Engineering to design and build their projects. Work in these labs can yield breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, and rarely, new sentient life-forms.
These labs assist in the study of planetary bodies with rocky surfaces. Work in this lab studies and predicts seismic activity including volcanic eruptions and long-term plate techtonics. Geologists can also predict the behaviour of rocky planets without a molten core from these labs. Meteorology labs are closely associated with geology labs, and they will typically work hand-in-hand on a variety of projects.
These labs are for the study and creation of new holographic technologies and programs. The Emergency Medical Hologram and the Prometheus's ship-wide holographic matrix were created here, for example. Usually, an engineer will work closely with the holographist to assist in the coding or design of hardware. These labs are not usually for writing recreational programs - those can be created locally at the holosuite. Work in holograhy labs can yield breakthroughs in holographic presentation, design, technology and operation.
These labs are for the study of growing plants in a medium other than soil, including nutrient-rich liquids. On some starships, hydroponics bays are used for growing fresh fruits and vegetables. On others, the hydroponics bay can double as the ship's arboretum where a soil-based garden isn't an option. Work in these labs can yield gardening options other than soil for places such as pre-terraformed planets and space stations.
These labs focus on mapping space. When discovering new objects or phenomena, scientists will utilize the Stellar Cartography and/or Astrometrics labs to plot them. Your ship may have one or both of these labs, depending on class. The difference is subtle. Stellar Cartography is simply the mapping of space, identifying where bodies are. Astrometrics is more involved and includes actual cataloguing of these bodies, along with pertinent characteristics.
